Much of the work on cyberinfrastructure return on investment (ROI) has been conducted at the national level and has addressed the benefits that accrue to nations and society as a whole due to investments in research cyberinfrastructure, and how government-funded services and facilities shape research institution strategies and investment. This work provides a basis but needs interpretation to be relevant to individual institutions. It further needs updating to be responsive to emerging technologies like artificial intelligence that are heavily data dependent. The consortium will gather information about the network institutions so as to build a coherent understanding of the value, return on investment, and impact of advanced cyberinfrastructure to the Midwest as well as network participants’ home institutions. These activities will serve as a blueprint for other regional and national efforts to gain insights which can be shared with institutional leadership; we plan to produce best practices and resource requirements documents that we refer to as toolkits.
