Affinity groups are community-led groups formed around a shared interest or goal. Affinity groups are eligible for up to $2,000 for planned activities.

Artificial Intelligence in Research Computing and Data. This group explores the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Research Computing in higher education and research institutions. The group provides a space for professionals to discuss how AI is reshaping research support, infrastructure planning, and policy development. Read more about the AI in RCD group here.

CRYO-EM. A community of practice focused on supporting researchers and facilitators working with cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) across the Midwest. Cryo-EM is a rapidly growing set of experimental techniques for studying biological structures at scales ranging from entire cells down to individual proteins. These methods come with complex workflows that span various devices, data types, and computational platforms. Read more about the Cryo-EM group here.

Globus Compute. The group aims to make navigating the service, whether for single-user or multi-user installations, easier and more accessible. Together, they explore how to: Set up and configure Globus Compute for different environments; Help researchers integrate it into their workflows; Troubleshoot challenges and share tips for success. Read more about the Globus Compute group here.

CI Value, Return on Investment, and Impact. The consortium gathers information about the network institutions to build a coherent understanding of the value, return on investment, and impact of advanced cyberinfrastructure to the Midwest as well as network participants’ home institutions.  Read more about the ROI group here

Next Generation Data Centers. Increasing interest from researchers in accelerators has put pressure on existing computing and data resources and their facilities. New and anticipated compute architectures have power and cooling requirements that will further strain existing data center capacity. Read more about the NexGen Affinity Group here

The Scientific Cloud Affinity Group looks at how traditional HPC centers approach cloud computing to support increasingly diverse scientific and engineering research and education endeavors. Further, it addresses what skill sets CI professionals will need to have to support the scientific cloud. Read more about the Scientific Cloud here.

Inclusive Work Environments. We strive to build an inclusive and equitable culture to promote and increase inclusive work environments. Read more about the IWE group here.
